Call it the standing obligation
There is a duty running underneath your working life that nobody assigned and nobody can revoke: whatever needs doing gets done, by you, to the standard, regardless of conditions. Capricorn at the tail in the House of Work and Health made that arrangement the ground rather than a choice.
The name is worth having because it explains why time off does not help. The obligation does not pause. It is the reason your record is unbroken and the reason no version of you exists that is simply not responsible for anything.
What everybody around you relies on
Colleagues plan on the assumption that your part will be finished, and they are right to, because it always has been. That reliability underwrites more of your workplace than anybody has calculated. It is also invisible in exactly the way infrastructure is invisible: nobody thinks about the floor until it moves, and yours has never moved once.
The endurance you never had to build
You can keep going through conditions that make other people stop: long stretches without recognition, work that is not interesting, periods where the effort is obviously not being noticed. Most people need a reason. You do not, which is a genuine structural advantage and the source of nearly everything you have built.
The load only ever grows
Because you absorb rather than negotiate, each new demand joins the previous ones and none of them leave. The increase is small enough each time to be unreasonable to object to. Across a decade it produces a workload nobody designed and nobody would defend, carried by somebody who has never once said it was too much.
Write down what you actually carry
Cancer stands beside it as the far point, in the arena of the inner life, where the growth is being looked after rather than depended on. Leave a record: list everything you are currently responsible for, including the unofficial items, and read it as though it belonged to somebody else. Your reaction to that list is the argument you have never been able to make on your own behalf.
Maintenance postponed until it is unavoidable
Your own upkeep sits at the bottom of a list that never empties, so it happens only when something becomes impossible to work through. That is not neglect; it is a queue with a permanent backlog ahead of it. Book the appointments a year in advance, all of them, in one afternoon. Scheduling beats intention here every time.
An unbroken record reads as availability
Your working history has no gaps and no failures in it, which is genuinely rare and reads to an employer as dependability rather than as ambition. Nobody promotes the floor they are standing on. Put one thing in writing this year that is a request rather than a report — a named role, with a date attached to it. A record speaks for competence and never once for what you want.
Respected, and never asked along
At work you are taken seriously and rarely included in anything informal, because you have never given the impression of being available for it. The exclusion is not unkind. It is a straightforward reading of somebody who is visibly always working. Go to the next unstructured thing and stay for an hour.
The provider arrives already spent
The obligation does not stop at the end of the working day; it changes location. Home receives a person still discharging duties, which is why the household is well run and why nobody there has met the off-duty version. Take one evening a week entirely off obligation, announced in advance. The announcement is what makes it real.
Earned to the last hour
Everything you have came from work performed, which is honourable and means your income has a hard ceiling set by your own capacity. Nothing in your financial life earns while you sleep. Put one arrangement in place that does, however modest. The point is not the yield; it is that a life of pure effort has no exit built into it.
