Doing the work, and reading the room while you do it
Both run at once, all day. The tasks get completed and, alongside them, you are tracking who is struggling, what the atmosphere is doing, which colleague has gone quiet. Cancer holding the tail in the House of Work and Health means the daily job has always included an unpaid second one.
The pattern belongs to this arena because being attuned was how you were useful and safe at the same time. The reading is accurate and constant, and it means an ordinary working day costs you rather more than it costs the people around you.
What your colleagues actually get
People work better near you and mostly cannot say why. You notice the difficulty early, adjust the pressure, remember what is going on in their lives. Teams with somebody like you in them hold together through periods that would otherwise break them, and almost none of that appears in any assessment of your performance.
You see it coming a fortnight out
You can tell well in advance who is heading for a bad patch, and you are right often enough to act on it without checking. That is a real capability applied to people rather than to systems, and no training programme reliably produces it in anybody. It has almost certainly prevented several departures that nobody ever traced back to you. None of that appears anywhere in writing.
You carry the load home
The cost is that the state of your workplace does not stay at your workplace. A difficult atmosphere follows you into the evening, and a colleague's bad week occupies your Sunday. Nothing was ever formally taken on. The material simply arrives, and in forty years of working life there has never been a mechanism for setting any of it down again.
Let somebody notice you for once
Capricorn marks the other end, in the arena of the inner life, where the growth is a boundary that holds without an explanation attached. Try the reversal directly: tell one colleague you are having a difficult week, before they ask, and let them respond. Occupying the other chair for ten minutes is the specific unpractised move.
Other people's weeks land in your body
Workplace tension you did not create still reaches your sleep and your stomach, which is why a period of organisational trouble affects you physically more than it affects your colleagues. The mechanism is absorption rather than stress. Build a deliberate transition between work and home — a walk, a change of clothes, ten minutes of nothing.
The half of the job with no title
A substantial part of what you actually do is holding the working relationships together, and none of it appears in any description of your role, so it accumulates for years without converting into standing or into money. Write down three specific occasions where it changed an outcome, with dates. Unnamed work stays unpaid until somebody puts it in writing, and the somebody has to be you.
The lunch break that is really a shift
Your breaks in the working day tend to fill with somebody else's situation, so the hour that was meant to be recovery becomes a second period of attention. It is generous and it means you have not genuinely stopped since you started the job. Take one break alone, outside, with no conversation in it. Solitude in the middle of a working day is the specific thing missing.
The same service, at home
Whatever you provide at work you also provide domestically, so there is no location in your life where you are not the one attending to everybody. The pattern is identical in both places and gets treated as two separate facts. Take one of them off duty for a month and see what the other does.
The job is doing the work of a safety net
You tend to treat your employment as the whole of your material security, which loads the working relationship with far more weight than it was built to carry and makes leaving nearly unthinkable even when it is obviously right. Build one financial thing that has nothing to do with the job at all. Independence is what makes it possible to be honest at work.
