Somebody has to be able to see what you did

What that gives an organisation is somebody who genuinely cares how the thing turns out. You will not deliver adequate work under your own name, which makes you unusually reliable on anything visible.
People do their best work for you
As a lead you run a warm operation: credit given properly, effort noticed, the team treated as people rather than as capacity. Loyalty follows, and your former colleagues stay in touch for decades. That is a genuine leadership capability and it is worth naming in the terms organisations use rather than leaving it to be felt.
Your standing matters to you more than the money
How you are regarded professionally affects you at a level that pay does not reach, which means an underpaid role with real recognition can hold you and a well-paid invisible one cannot. The difficult period is concealed
When a role is going badly, the presentation holds: the confident account, the visible competence, the refusal to be seen struggling. Nobody offers help to somebody who appears to be doing well. Survive one year of being unremarkable
Every career contains a stretch with nothing visible in it, and this arrangement handles that badly. Decide in advance what you will hold on to during such a period: a private standard, an outside project, a definition of doing well that does not require anybody to notice. That decision is much easier to make beforehand.
Take the role with a front to it
Presenting, leading, teaching, representing the organisation to the outside: your output is markedly higher wherever the work is delivered by a person rather than by a department. Backstage roles waste you. Where one is unavoidable, secure a recurring visible moment in it, since without one you will be looking elsewhere within a year.
Being overlooked drains you faster than overwork
Long hours with recognition leave you fine and a light week of being ignored leaves you heavy, which is the opposite of how most people work and worth knowing about yourself. Track the acknowledgement rather than the workload, since that is the input your energy is actually responding to. Ask for it plainly where it is missing, since a manager who has never been told will assume the silence means everything is fine.
You wanted them to be proud
There was somebody at home whose approval the whole enterprise was originally for, and the sentence you were waiting to hear may never have been said. Achievements have been laid in front of that person for years. It is worth asking what you would be pursuing if the audience were removed entirely, since a good deal of the current schedule was set by a room you left decades ago.
Your name gets you into rooms
You are professionally memorable: people recall meeting you, describe you warmly and put you forward for things. That reputation opens doors and it is maintained by warmth rather than by strategy, which is why it does not feel like networking. Keep it in repair when you do not need anything, since that is when it is built.
The public life needs a private witness
Whatever happens at work, you need somebody at home who knows what it cost and can say so, since the recognition available in public is not the kind that reaches you. Tell a partner explicitly that this is the job, because it looks like a small thing to ask and it is the actual support you need.
