You go at a group the way you go at a system
You approach a circle the way you approach anything that is not working properly. Mars in Virgo in the 11th house sends your practical energy into groups, so the community you belong to acquires a spreadsheet, a rota and somebody who actually knows what was agreed.
The sign is why the contribution is administrative and the house is why it is collective. That makes you indispensable to any group you join and largely uncelebrated inside it, because the work only becomes visible in the year you stop doing it.
The rota exists because you made it
Groups you belong to run better and nobody can point to why. The bookings happen, the money is accounted for, somebody remembered the thing that was decided in March. It is real work and it accumulates without being assigned. Say what you do, once, at a meeting. Not for thanks, but so that the volume is on the record.
Causes served with actual skill
You do not campaign, you do the useful thing: the accounts kept, the process built, the arrangement that makes a small organisation viable. That contribution is worth more than most of the visible activity around it. Choose the causes that need a competent person rather than the ones that move you most, because the first is where you are irreplaceable.
Assessing the people you like
You form clear judgements about friends: who follows through, who says things they do not mean, who is reliable in a difficulty. The assessments are usually right and entirely private. They also mean you keep a small circle and rarely tell anybody what standing they have. Say something appreciative out loud. Nobody has any idea they passed.
Where the resentment collects
Competence gets assumed, then relied on, then not noticed, and after a few years there is a quiet ledger of everything you have absorbed. It never gets raised because raising it would be petty and because you would have to itemise. Set a limit in advance instead. Decide what you will do this year and let the rest be somebody else's problem.
Ask to be relieved before you resent it
The moment to hand something over is well before you have started keeping score, and you will pass that moment without noticing because the work is not hard, only endless. Give one function away at the start of each year, chosen while you still enjoy it. Handing over something you resent goes badly and handing over something you like goes well.
The world is not a backlog
Everything you look at presents itself as something that could be run better, and there is no shortage. Left unmanaged that turns into a life of maintaining other people's arrangements. Choose the two or three that are actually yours and formally decline the rest. Declining has to be a decision, because nothing will stop arriving on its own.
You watched how they handled the shared task
What convinces you about somebody is conduct under an ordinary obligation: whether they did the thing they said they would, whether they were pleasant about the boring half of it, whether anybody had to chase them. That is a better test than most people apply and it is invisible to the person being tested. Tell them at some point what it was that decided you. It is a compliment nobody has ever received before.
The group money you have been holding
You end up treasurer of things, formally or otherwise, and the arrangements are meticulous and largely undocumented outside your own head. That is a risk to you rather than to them. Write down how it works, hand a copy to somebody, and set up a second signatory. It protects you specifically, which is the part that has not occurred to you.
Yours is the appointment that gets cancelled
When something collides, the thing that moves is always the one only you would miss: the training slot, the check-up, the evening with nothing scheduled in it. Everybody else's commitment survives because somebody else would be inconvenienced. Give one of yours a second person attached to it, precisely so that it acquires the protection your own needs never get.
