Keep the contact alive with twenty people when you need nothing, since this is the only asset you have that stops working the moment it is neglected.
You are better beside the leader than in front
The position immediately alongside whoever is in charge suits you exactly: enough authority to shape what happens, none of the exposure that requires making unpopular declarations in public. That is an accurate fit rather than a shortage of ambition. Ask for the deputy role with real scope instead of the title that comes with real isolation, since one of them uses your ability and the other tests your weakest point.

From home your working life looks sociable and pleasant, so the strain of constant accommodation is invisible to the people you live with. You have never described it. Say what a day of managing people actually takes out of you, because the alternative is being expected to arrive home in exactly the state you left.
