The habit belongs to this arena because being unobjectionable was safer than being backed. The judgement involved is genuine and unusually fine. What has never been required is a position that some people actively opposed while others actively wanted it.
What the acceptability has bought
You have been present in rooms that excluded more forceful people, trusted by factions that trusted nobody else, and available for roles that required somebody without enemies. That is not a small achievement and it cannot be manufactured. Several situations have held together because you were the one person all sides could live with.
The groove is finding the version everybody accepts
Given a decision, you locate the option that produces the least resistance rather than the one you think is right, and you do it before the alternatives have been properly stated. The result is usually workable. It is also the reason your professional record contains almost nothing that anybody had to be persuaded of.
Standing without a position attached
The cost is that nobody knows what you would do with authority, including the people who might grant it. Advancement goes to candidates whose direction is legible, even when the direction is wrong. Being liked by everyone is a genuine asset and it is not a substitute for anybody knowing what you are for.
Count the times you were opposed
Aries sits opposite, in the arena of home and private ground, where the growth is a self that does not require agreement. Change the measure for a year: count the occasions on which somebody senior actively disagreed with a position you had taken, and nothing about how smoothly anything went. A low number is not a good result.

Safety is chosen when nothing is at stake. State a direction and let it cost you one opportunity. The next one will be a better fit.

Run through your working history and look for the occasion when your choice cost somebody else something they minded. There may not be one, which sounds like an achievement and is closer to a description of what has never been risked. Every advance of any size disadvantages somebody. Take one step this year that a reasonable person could resent, and let them.
The household absorbed the compromises
Professional accommodations have consequences at home — the move made, the hours accepted, the plan quietly postponed — and your household has carried every one of them without ever being consulted about the original decision. They sat downstream of a room they were not in. Bring one work decision home while it is still open and let them have a view. Being asked matters considerably more to people than the outcome does.
Standing in for somebody else's claim
In professional disputes you regularly end up carrying an argument that belongs to somebody else, because you can put it better and without heat, and both sides prefer hearing it from you. It is a real service and your own case never gets the same treatment. Decline one of those errands this year and let the owner make it. Advocacy has to be spent on something.
Rewarded in respect, paid in the middle
You tend to land somewhere in the acceptable band of what a role pays, because you present as reasonable and reasonable candidates get reasonable numbers. Nobody has ever had to stretch for you. The difference across a working life is substantial and entirely unrecoverable afterwards. Ask, once, for the figure at the top of the band and give no justification for it.
