It also means the parts of a career that get built in private — the method, the system, the durable thing — have never had your hours.
What the presence actually provides
You can make people care about something they had no interest in ten minutes earlier, which is a genuinely scarce commodity in any organisation. Good work with nobody able to convey it is worth considerably less than it should be. Several projects around you have survived because you were the one explaining them.
Replaceable in a way that builders are not

Starting from nothing is a condition you have not been in for decades.
Performing has a running cost
Being on takes real energy and it does not present as work, so it never gets budgeted for and never gets recovered from. The tiredness that follows a successful day is invisible even to you. Schedule genuine recovery around the visible events rather than after them, and treat it as part of the commitment.
Recognition accepted instead of terms
You have taken the better title, the visible project or the platform at a number you did not push on, because the recognition felt like the real currency. It is a currency and it is not legal tender. Negotiate the money in a separate conversation from the credit. Both are available and rarely granted together.
