What this builds is a framework that does not fail when circumstances turn: because it was constructed with the worst case included, nothing that happens invalidates it. People with sunnier philosophies are periodically left with nothing to stand on. Yours holds, and other people notice this about you during the periods when it matters.
What you believe was earned rather than adopted
You hold very little that somebody handed you, because everything went through examination first and most of it did not survive. The result is a small set of convictions with genuine weight behind them. It is worth writing down what actually remains, since a framework this hard-won is currently stored entirely in your head and has never been read back.
Fields that reward seeing what is underneath
Investigation, risk, forensic and diligence work, psychology, anything where the stated version and the actual version differ — these use the faculty you have rather than asking you to suppress it. In fields built on optimism you will be experienced as a problem, however accurate you are. The mismatch is about register rather than competence.
You are difficult to enthuse and worth convincing
Friends learn quickly that selling you anything is hard work, and that your agreement, once actually given, is entirely genuine. That combination makes your endorsement unusually valuable and your company occasionally deflating to be in. Both of those are true at the same time. The people who stay around are the ones who worked out early that the resistance was never about them.
You are looking for what has not been said yet
Early in a relationship your attention goes to what is being withheld rather than to what is being offered, and you are frequently right that something is. Being right about this is not the same as it being useful, since almost everyone is withholding something early on. The question worth asking is whether it is the kind of thing that matters.
