A standard you have never missed
A job description, a plan for the next five years, a standard you have never missed — with the North Node in Pisces in the 10th house, the public role is supposed to answer to something that cannot be specified. You need one professional choice made for a reason you cannot fully justify.
A career built entirely on what can be specified will be competent, well regarded and slightly hollow. The part that gives work its meaning has never appeared on any of your criteria.
Do one piece of work for the wrong reasons
Start with a project chosen because it moves you rather than because it advances anything: the badly paid one, the cause, the thing outside your field entirely. Then do not build a professional justification for it afterwards. The exercise is having an unaccountable item in your working life, which you have never permitted.
An unjustifiable choice feels like a lapse
Making a professional decision you cannot defend produces a persistent sense of having gone wrong somewhere, and the temptation is to construct the case retrospectively. Resist the construction entirely, including in private. Let one decision stand as something you simply wanted to do, and then see whether anybody ever actually asks about it.
Work that means something to you
What accumulates is a professional life with an unmeasurable component in it: work you would still do if the incentives changed, a direction chosen by something other than analysis. It makes the bad years survivable in a way that competence alone does not, and it can only be built by choosing unjustifiably.
Optimising the career instead of choosing
The retreat is planning: the options compared, the trajectory modelled, the decision deferred until the analysis resolves itself. It never resolves, because the thing you are actually deciding is not a matter that analysis can settle. Notice the third round of comparison arriving, and then choose the option you keep returning to regardless of what the model says.
Let the reputation be imperfect
You have never allowed a piece of work out that could be criticised, which caps both your output and your reach at the same time. Publish something with a visible flaw in it this year. The criticism arrives and is survivable, and the volume of work you can produce afterwards roughly doubles. That trade has been available for years.
What you are remembered for is not the record
The professional legacy you have been assembling is a list of things achieved, and almost nobody is remembered for their list. What survives is how you were to work with, what you noticed about people, whether they felt seen by you. None of that is recordable anywhere. Attend to it deliberately from now on regardless.
Your family cannot assess this either
The people who raised you have a picture of what a good career looks like and it is entirely specifiable: the title, the security, the trajectory. What you are moving toward will not fit that picture and may never be legible to them. Proceed anyway, and stop looking for a version they can approve.
The body will tell you before the plan does
When a professional direction is wrong for you, the first indication is physical — the Sunday dread, the flatness, the sleep that changes — and it arrives long before any of your criteria register a problem. Treat that as data rather than as weakness. It has been more accurate than your analysis every time.
Stop letting the figure decide
Every option gets filtered through what it pays before anything else is considered, and that happens so early you experience it as having had no other choices. Look at one decision with the money deliberately removed from the comparison, then add it back at the very end. What survives that order of operations is often different.
