Decide in advance what condition would count as enough, write it down, and honour it when it arrives. Otherwise the arrangement simply continues and the life it was for never opens.

Avoid environments with no continuity. Your advantage is time, and it can only be realised where the same place is still there in fifteen years. That also means choosing employers by whether they are likely to survive you, which is an unusual criterion and the right one here.
The work simply expands into whatever is available
The public role is what you protect first, so when something gives it will be the sleep, the meals or the weekend rather than the commitments. None of that is visible to anybody and none of it feels like a decision at the time. Put the recovery into the diary as appointments with the same status as everything else in it, since an unbooked hour will be reallocated within a week.
Somebody expected this of you
Achievement meant something specific in the household you came from, and whatever that meaning was, you absorbed it before you were old enough to examine it: what counted as getting on, what would have been a disappointment, which career was never mentioned as an option. Some of those rules belonged to a generation with entirely different constraints. Look at which ones you are still administering on their behalf.
Respected across a profession, known by few
In your field the name carries weight and almost nobody could describe what you are like. That separation was deliberate at the start and has become simply how you operate. It works, and it means three decades of daily contact have produced very few people who would ring you about something other than work. One deliberate exception, chosen and pursued, is enough to change the shape of the whole thing.

There is a version of this in which the position is reached, the standing is secured, and the whole apparatus turns out to have been assembled for an occasion that never arrives. What is the structure for: that question belongs at the halfway point rather than the end. Answering it does not require dismantling anything. It changes what the next fifteen years are spent adding to, which is the only part still available.
