You look for what the difficult thing means

That framing genuinely carries you through experiences that flatten other people. It can also arrive early, before the thing has been felt, and a meaning assembled that quickly is frequently a way of not staying with it.
You will discuss what nobody else will
Death, money, betrayal, what people actually do — you talk about all of it plainly, with curiosity rather than dread, and without the lowered voice everybody else uses. That is a genuine service, particularly to people who have been carrying something alone. Read the room first, though: your ease with the subject is not shared, and an unprepared listener experiences the frankness as a shock.
Shared arrangements get entered optimistically
Joint ventures, loans between friends, money mixed with goodwill — you commit on the basis that everybody involved will behave well, which is generous and occasionally expensive. The optimism is not the problem; the absent paperwork is. Write the terms down precisely because you trust them, and you can keep your view of people and stop paying for it.
The details of the difficult thing get skipped
You grasp the shape of a crisis immediately and lose interest in the administration of it: the forms, the accounts, the sequence somebody has to actually execute. Those are exactly what this department is made of. Ask one detail-minded person to sit with you for an afternoon at the start of anything serious. It is the cheapest hour you will ever buy.
You come out of it larger
Genuine reversals tend to expand rather than diminish you: the belief revised, the horizon widened, the thing you now understand that you could not have learned any other way. That is a real capacity and worth knowing you have. It is also worth not testing deliberately, which this position occasionally arranges without admitting to it.
The meaning has to be earned, not fitted
Your gift is finding the significance in a difficult passage and your risk is supplying it too early, before the thing has been properly felt, so that the interpretation becomes a way of skipping the experience. Wait longer than is comfortable before you decide what something was for. The account you write in the first month is almost always about the wrong thing.
You are the one who says it at the table
When something serious has happened, you name it out loud among relatives who had agreed by silent consensus not to. Sometimes that is the most useful thing anybody does all year. Sometimes it is a conversation they were genuinely not ready for. Ask one person privately whether it should be raised, and let their answer decide it rather than your own certainty.
Other people's money is easier to spend well
You are considerably better at deploying resources for a shared purpose than for your own: the fund raised, the venture backed, the money that went somewhere it genuinely mattered. Where you are weak is the personal accounting sitting underneath all that. Keep the two entirely separate — different accounts, different rules, different thresholds — so that your generosity on the collective side stops quietly running on your own reserves.
You want somebody who has been through something
Depth of experience is what draws you: a person who has lost something, changed their mind about something large, or come out the other side of a difficult passage. Untested company bores you within a year. That is a genuine criterion and worth stating, because from outside it looks like a preference for complication rather than for substance.
