Decide in advance that you will apply for things on merit and let the other person do the same. Withdrawing quietly is not kindness, it is a decision made on their behalf.

People believe you when you say something is even, and that credibility is worth a great deal in any negotiation. It only works while you are also willing to use it on your own side occasionally. A reputation for fairness that never produces anything for you is being spent by everybody except its owner.

Nearly everything in your working life arrived because somebody spoke well of you, which makes maintaining a small number of relationships more important than any other professional activity. Do it deliberately rather than by inclination: three contacts a year with people you are not currently working with, and one specific statement of what you are looking for.
The version of success that was somebody else's
You are good at reading what would be admired and it is entirely possible to have built a career against that reading without ever having stated your own. Write down what you would do if nobody whose opinion you value were ever going to hear about it. The answer is worth having even if you change nothing.
The line between colleague and friend was never drawn
You do not keep working relationships at a professional distance, so the people around you at work become part of your actual life and the awkward decisions about them become genuinely difficult. That is the trade and it is worth making. What you cannot do is invoke a professional boundary at the moment a hard call arrives, having never once observed one before then.
The career shaped by what was expected
There was a version of a respectable life that your family held, and your choices have either matched it or been quietly justified against it ever since. Neither is the same as having chosen freely. Look at the specific expectation and ask whether anybody currently holds it. Several of these are being honoured on behalf of nobody.
Managing everybody's comfort at work
The relational maintenance you do in a working day is real labour and it appears on no job description, which means the fatigue arrives with no explanation attached and you will call it laziness. Count it as work. Then treat a week of heavy negotiation the way anybody else would treat a week of heavy lifting.
