Nothing you own is meant to go unnoticed

The pleasure of money for you is largely in giving it away visibly: the round bought, the trip paid for, the gift that was too much. That is genuine and it functions as a demonstration. The version worth watching is generosity you cannot afford, which converts an act of warmth into a quiet resentment that neither party can name later.
One good thing rather than five adequate ones
Your spending concentrates: the excellent coat, the proper tool, the thing bought once at a level you had to stretch for. This is a defensible strategy and it produces a life with very good objects in it. What it does not produce is depth of reserve, because everything went into the visible tier and nothing into the invisible one.
The income that has to be worthy of you
You will decline work that pays well and reads as beneath you, and you will accept less money for something with standing attached. That is a real preference with real costs, and it is better made consciously. Write down what the difference is worth in a year. Sometimes you will pay it happily, which is fine, and at least it will have been priced.
What you are worth and what you have are not the same
A poor year lands on you as a verdict rather than as a season, because the account has quietly become a scoreboard for something else entirely. That link is worth cutting on purpose. List what you built in the lean year, and notice that none of the best items on the list produced an invoice.
Fund the invisible tier first
Everything you find satisfying about money is above the surface, so the boring layer underneath never gets built. Automate it out of reach before the visible spending starts, at a level you have set once and do not revisit monthly. The style survives intact and the fragility goes, and nobody can see the difference from outside, which is precisely why it works.
Ask for the title and the number together
Recognition and pay are not separate requests for you and should not be made separately. Going in for one and accepting the other is how you have ended up doing senior work at a junior rate more than once. Name both in the same sentence, with a figure. Your discomfort is with seeming grasping, and the combined ask reads as neither.
Spending on somebody is a language you should translate
You express affection in things: the ticket bought, the dinner covered, the extravagant present at a moment nobody expected. It is genuinely warm and it is not universally legible, and some partners will read it as display rather than as devotion. Say what the gesture meant when you make it. One sentence converts an object into a message.
The one who insisted on paying
In your family you take the bill, cover the shortfall and refuse the offer to split, and it is generous and slightly territorial at the same time. Occasionally let somebody else host, pay and be thanked. The pleasure you are taking is real, and it is a pleasure other people would also like access to.
Deciding what you would still want if nobody knew
A useful exercise, run once a year, is to work out which of the things you are pursuing you would still want if the result were entirely private. Most of them survive the test. The one or two that do not are the ones consuming a disproportionate amount of your effort, and identifying them is considerably cheaper than achieving them.
