The working day fills with looking after people
What grows for you is Cancer-shaped, and it grows in the 6th house: the ordinary day expands to include everybody's difficulties, and your usefulness has never been confined to your tasks. Hostile workplaces cost you health, not merely cheer. What this needs is a role where the caring is part of the job.
You are the reason several people have stayed, and none of that appears anywhere. The load is genuine, it accumulates by the week, and it is invisible precisely because you have always absorbed it without comment.
Colleagues bring you what they cannot take upstairs
People at work tell you things they have told nobody else, and you have been holding at least one situation for months on somebody else's behalf. It is a position of trust and it has no support attached. Find one person outside the organisation you can talk to in general terms, because carrying this alone is what turns it into exhaustion.
Work chosen for who it helps
You have repeatedly taken the job with the better purpose over the job with the better terms, and you would do it again. That is a real value and it should be a priced one. Ask for the money as well as the meaning, since organisations that rely on vocation are extremely comfortable paying in it.
A routine built around your mood
Your day works when the conditions feel right and falls apart when they do not, which makes your output look inconsistent to anybody measuring it without knowing what the week contained. Nothing here is fixed by discipline. Arrange the week around the hours when you are actually able to work, and protect the two that reliably function.
The body keeps the score of the week
Strain arrives physically before you have consciously registered it: the stomach, the sleep, the appetite that goes when a situation at work is unresolved. Your body is a fairly accurate instrument that you routinely overrule. When the eating changes, look at what is unfinished with a person rather than at what is unfinished on the list.
Work is where most of your people came from
The friendships that have lasted mostly began at a job, because sustained daily contact is how you get close to anybody. That is a reliable mechanism and it stops the moment somebody leaves. Move two of them onto a footing that has nothing to do with the workplace, deliberately, before the next resignation makes it awkward.
The household runs on your maintenance
At home you handle the invisible logistics: what is running out, who has an appointment, what needs doing before it becomes a problem. None of it is dramatic and all of it is load-bearing. Write a week of it down and put it where everybody can see, because this kind of work is only ever noticed in its absence.
You underprice work that involves caring
Anything with looking after in it gets quoted low by you, because charging properly for care feels like a contradiction. It is not, and the discount is substantial over a career. Set the rate by the hours and the skill involved, and stop letting the emotional content of the work function as a discount.
You go on until somebody makes you stop
Left alone you will work through what you should not, because stopping means somebody else has to manage. The signal to rest never comes from you. Give one person permission to tell you plainly when you look finished, and agree in advance that you will take the afternoon when they say so.
Advancement means leaving the people behind
Every step up in your working life has involved distance from the colleagues you looked after, and that cost has stopped you at least once. It is a genuine loss and it is not a reason to stay. Take the position and keep three of them, deliberately, because the relationships you protect by refusing promotion rarely survive anyway.
