Learning at depth happens for you through apprenticeship rather than through theory: watching somebody who knows, then doing it badly for a long time. Lectures leave little behind. Choose the version of any course that involves the actual thing, and be patient with the beginner phase, which lasts longer for you and ends further along than it does for quicker people.
Attracted to a different way of living
You are often drawn to somebody from another culture, region or background, and the pull is sensory before it is intellectual: their food, their pace, the way their family does things. That is a fine reason to be interested and a poor basis for assuming agreement. Talk early about the practical arrangements, since the differences that matter for you show up in the kitchen and the calendar.
Work that carries something across a border
Your professional sweet spot involves moving physical or cultural goods between places: import, food, craft, hospitality, teaching a tradition, representing one world to another. Purely abstract international work engages you far less. Look for the version with an actual object or practice at the centre of it, and expect the relationships to take years and then pay for a decade.

You keep a small number of foreign friendships going for decades through visits rather than through messages, and resuming after two years takes about four minutes. It is a durable and low-maintenance form of connection. Do put the next visit in the calendar before leaving, because without a date the interval quietly stretches from two years to seven.
Money spent on going properly
When you travel you spend well and you regret almost none of it, because you buy the version that works: the good room, the long stay, the meal that was the point of the trip. Fund it as a standing line rather than as an occasional extravagance. Saved for steadily, the trip you actually want costs less than the three compromises you would otherwise take.
You bring the outside world home
Within your family you are the one who introduces the unfamiliar food, the different way of doing things, the news from somewhere else, and you do it by putting it on the table rather than by arguing for it.
