Convictions held on principle rather than habit
What you believe about how life should be organised was arrived at rather than absorbed, and you can give the reasons. That is rarer than it sounds. It also makes you immovable on certain points, so check occasionally whether a position you reasoned your way to twenty years ago still holds up against what you know now.
An outsider wherever you go, including home
Abroad you are obviously foreign and at home you have never entirely belonged either, and the second is the one that took longer to notice. The position has advantages: you see structures that insiders cannot. It is also lonely in a way that is difficult to describe to anybody who has always fitted somewhere.
Ideas taken up before they are respectable

Get one thing recognised formally anyway, since the world still asks and you have nothing to show it.
Distance suits you better than it ought to
A relationship conducted partly across countries, or through long absences, works unusually well for you, because the space is built into the arrangement rather than negotiated inside it. That is a genuine compatibility rather than a compromise. Say so plainly where the arrangement is available, since a partner who assumes you are enduring it will keep trying to close a gap you actually wanted.
Work that crosses a border of some kind
Roles that involve moving between countries, disciplines or communities suit you, because the translation between two ways of thinking is precisely what you are good at. Look for the position that exists in a gap rather than inside a structure, since that is where your outsider position becomes an asset instead of an obstacle.
The people you argue with are the ones you keep
Your longest friendships are with people who disagree with you productively and have been doing so for decades, frequently at a considerable distance and largely in writing. Agreement bores you and a good opponent is a genuine attachment. Say that out loud to somebody who has been mistaking your objections for hostility, since it is affection expressed in the only dialect you are properly fluent in.
You will fund the principle over the return
Where you put money reflects what you think should exist rather than what will grow fastest, and you have accepted worse returns knowingly. That is a legitimate way to invest. Keep one portion allocated on purely financial grounds, since a portfolio composed entirely of convictions has no defence against being wrong about one of them.
You did not keep the beliefs they gave you
Whatever your family assumed about religion, politics or how life should be conducted, you examined it and kept very little, usually young and without much drama. That was a real act of independence. Do say what you replaced it with occasionally, since silence lets people assume you simply believe nothing at all.
