Say one of them out loud, since a principle that has never been stated cannot be discussed, agreed with, or usefully argued against.
Kindness offered to people you will not meet
Your generosity goes readily to strangers, causes and abstractions, and considerably less readily to the person standing in front of you asking for something. Both are real and only one of them costs you anything. Do the difficult version once this year, since the distant kind is easier in every respect that matters.
Solitude turns out to be a requirement
You need substantial time alone in order to function, and you have probably framed it as antisocial rather than as maintenance. It is maintenance. Arrange it deliberately and say what it is for, since everyone around you experiences you as sociable and will keep filling any gap that appears in your week.
An idea of how things ought to be, carried alone
Somewhere in you is a fairly complete picture of a better arrangement, for your own life and for the world, and it has never been described to anybody. It affects everything and it is testable by nobody. Write it down once, since a private ideal that has never met an objection tends to become both purer and less usable every year.
Everybody in general, nobody in particular
You care about people at large with real conviction and find one specific person considerably harder, because a particular human being makes demands that a principle never does. Notice the pattern. The general version is genuine and it is also where you have been hiding from the more difficult and more rewarding one.
There is a version of you nobody has met
A good deal of what you actually think, want and intend has never been shown to anybody, and you have grown accustomed to being known approximately. That is not quite the same as being private; it is a habit that has hardened over years. Show one substantial thing to one person this year, since the gap between the public version and the real one widens on its own if nothing is done about it.
Fond of people from a distance
Your affection is genuine and it operates best with some space in it, so friends experience you as warm and hard to reach in roughly equal measure. Neither impression is wrong. Tell them how you work, since your pattern of appearing and vanishing is currently being interpreted by everybody individually and mostly incorrectly.
You detached early and quietly
At some point you stepped back from your family emotionally, without a row and probably without anybody noticing, and the distance has been maintained ever since. It was almost certainly necessary at the time. Ask whether the conditions that produced it still apply, since a decision made young tends to keep running long after its reasons have expired.
The idea you have never shown anybody
There is something you have been working out privately for years: a design, an argument, an approach nobody has seen. Your reasons for keeping it back are largely about not wanting it handled by other people. Show it to one person whose judgement you trust, since an idea that has never met a reader stops developing at some point without your noticing.
