The habit belongs to this arena because control over what people knew was the safest form of authority available. The discipline is genuine and it has protected you. What has never been necessary is being publicly wanting something and possibly not getting it.
What the reading of power gives you
You understand how decisions in an organisation actually get made — who has to be convinced, where the real veto sits, what the stated reason is covering. That is accurate intelligence and most people never acquire it at all. It has kept you out of several traps and put you in the right room more than once.
The groove is influence rather than claim
You get things done by positioning rather than by asking: the conversation had beforehand, the interest identified, the outcome arranged so that it appears to arise on its own. It works and it is invisible. Nothing in the record shows that you did it, which is precisely the design and increasingly the problem.
Nobody has heard you want something

Power understood, never claimed
You can see the whole structure clearly and have consistently declined to step into it, which keeps your judgement uncorrupted and leaves the actual decisions to people who understand considerably less. Accurate analysis is not a position and it never becomes one. Put your name forward for something with real authority attached to it and let the manoeuvring be visible for once. Being seen to want it is the price of getting it.
A record with the working parts hidden
What you have actually achieved is substantially larger than what can be pointed at, because the mechanism was always concealed and the credit went elsewhere by design. That design was protective and it has stopped serving. Write down what you did and to whom, privately, and then say one item of it out loud.
They watch the standing, not the person
Your family relates to your position — what you have achieved, where you have got to, what people say about you — and considerably less to whatever is going on underneath it. Some of that arrangement you built and some of it they inherited. Tell one relative about something at work that went badly and stop there, without the recovery. The unresolved version is the one that makes you a person to them.
The strain does not present
Nothing shows on you during a bad professional stretch, so the load keeps being allocated and the recovery never once gets scheduled. Colleagues distribute work by visible strain and you have never presented any. Take the leave while you are still functioning, on a date decided in advance, before there is any reason for it. Rest that has to be justified never happens.
Terms arranged rather than negotiated
You secure good outcomes by understanding what the other side needs and shaping the situation accordingly, which works reliably and means you have never simply stated a number and waited to see what happened. The manoeuvre is considerably more comfortable than the plain request. Name a figure once, without preamble, and let the silence afterwards do its own work. It belongs to them.
