Others join a group; you end up carrying it
Most people participate. You arrive, notice what is not being held together, and take it on, usually within a couple of months and without anybody asking. The tail of the axis sits in Capricorn in the House of Community, which made responsibility the form your belonging takes.
It grew up in this room because being necessary was how you secured a place among people. The competence is genuine. What has never been available is belonging to something purely as one of the members.
What the structure provides
Groups you belong to have accounts that balance, decisions that get made and a reason to still exist after five years, which is more than most manage. Collectives fail from disorganisation far more often than from disagreement. Several of yours are still going for reasons that have your name on them and no visible credit attached.
The groove is taking on the responsibility
Presented with a gap in any collective, your hands move before the question of whether it is yours has been considered by anybody. It is always needed, always defensible and never once discussed. Across a decade this produces a social life that consists almost entirely of obligations, each of which arrived perfectly reasonably. Nobody assigned any of it and nobody except you can hand it back.
Nobody in the group knows you
Members relate to your function rather than to you, because you have never presented anything else. They would describe you as the backbone of the thing and could not say what you enjoy or how you are. That is not indifference on their part; it is a straightforward consequence of what has been on offer.
Stop picking up what is lying there
Cancer waits at the opposite point, in the arena of unshared warmth, where the development is being looked after rather than depended upon. The move to retire is the automatic pick-up. For one year, let visible gaps in a group stay visible and see who else moves. Somebody usually does, eventually and worse.
Still holding what the founders left
You have stayed in groups long after the people who started them moved on, keeping the arrangement upright largely out of a sense that somebody ought to. That is institutional loyalty of a kind almost nobody offers and it has never been reciprocated by anyone. Ask what the group would actually do if you resigned this year. Take whatever answer comes back seriously.
The shared future you are underwriting
Collective plans in your life proceed on the assumption that you will carry whatever part nobody else can, and that assumption has never once been wrong or openly discussed. It amounts to a substantial standing guarantee that nobody has priced. Say out loud what you are and are not prepared to underwrite next time. Limits stated in advance are the only ones that hold.
Assessed against the life already built
You weigh a prospective partner partly on whether they will fit the structure you have spent years assembling: the commitments, the standards, the people already in place. It is prudent and it quietly selects against anybody who would require any of it to change. Let one connection develop that does not fit the arrangement. Nothing has to be dismantled to find out what it is.
Holding the long view for everybody
You keep the twenty-year picture on shared money — the provision, the plan, the thing the group will need long after everybody has forgotten discussing it — and you have been acting on it while others were not. Foresight goes unappreciated by definition. Tell the people it protects what you have actually been doing all this time.
You wrote the code nobody voted on
Among the people you count as your own there is a set of expectations about what is done and what constitutes turning up, and you are its author. It has held the group together for years and has never been discussed by anybody except you. Ask them which parts they would relax if it were up to them.
