The cost is range. Places, ideas and ways of living that would have suited you were declined early because they felt wrong rather than because they were, and the declining happened without any decision being registered. What accumulates is a life that fits comfortably and a set of doors that were never actually tried.
Hand the judging over for a week

Give one duty away: for a week, let somebody else decide what you read, watch or try, and follow it without vetoing anything on the grounds that it does not appeal. The absence of your own filter is the point.

You have a strong instinct for who is one of yours, and it operates before anybody has said much. It has kept you safe and it has also drawn a boundary around the range of people you have ever properly known. Spend real time with somebody outside the circle. The instinct is protective and it is not always right.

The pattern is consistent enough across the decades to be worth naming as a pattern. Say yes to the next one before you have consulted how it feels. You are drawn to people who feel like home, which is a genuine form of recognition and also selects for whatever you happen to be used to, including the parts of it that were difficult. Comfort and suitability are two different tests and only one has been applied. Ask what is familiar about the pattern rather than about the person in front of you. The answer is usually available immediately.

The frame you use to judge things came out of your household and has been carried without much separation since, which makes disagreeing with any of it feel like disloyalty rather than like ordinary thinking. Those are two entirely different acts. Hold one position your family would dislike, quietly and without announcing it, and notice that nothing collapses anywhere. Nobody is even required to know.
The remedy that was always used at home
Your habits around getting better came from the household you grew up in and have been followed ever since without much review, which is comforting and occasionally decades out of date.
