The conversation that never ends in a decision
There is a conversation you have every couple of years about where you might live, and it has never ended in a decision. With the North Node in Sagittarius in the 4th house, home is supposed to be chosen rather than kept provisional. You need one place you have committed to.
Keeping your options open about where and how you live has felt like freedom. What it has produced is a couple of decades of temporary arrangements and no base.
Committing to a place feels final
Choosing where to live closes a set of imagined alternative lives, and that closing registers as a loss even when the actual alternatives were never going to be taken. Notice the difference between losing an option and losing a plan. Commit to one place for five years and watch which of your imagined lives you actually miss.
Decide, out loud, for five years
Start with a stated commitment rather than a purchase: say where you are living for the next five years, to somebody who will remember it. Then act as though it is settled — plant something, join something local, take on the thing that requires being here. Behaviour follows the declaration rather than the other way round.
A neighbourhood that knows you
Being permanently provisional means the people around where you live have never invested in you either, which is reasonable of them. Commit visibly and it changes within about a year: names get learned, invitations arrive, somebody notices when you are away. That local fabric is one of the few things a moving life cannot have.
A base with something growing on it
What accumulates is the specific value of staying: a garden that took six years, neighbours who owe you favours, a house that fits because you have adjusted it slowly. None of it transfers and all of it is unavailable to somebody keeping their options open. It is worth considerably more than the flexibility it replaces.
A home you would defend
The long project here is a place and a set of people you have decided on, rather than the ones that happened to be available. The deciding is the whole difficulty. Say out loud what you are building at home and who it is for, and then check every domestic decision for a year against that sentence.
Choose a life together, not just a year
Domestic arrangements with you tend to be provisional by mutual unspoken agreement: nothing bought jointly, nothing planned past the current lease. Name the long version once — five years, a place, a shape of life — and let it be a commitment rather than a discussion. Provisional is comfortable and it stops anything being built.
A settled base does something for the body
Living somewhere temporary keeps a low-grade alertness running: unfinished rooms, unlearned routes, nothing quite where it belongs. It costs sleep and attention in ways that never look like a health problem. Commit to one place and finish setting it up. The improvement usually appears within two months and is easy to misattribute.
Belonging somewhere takes years
Your local relationships restart every time you move, so none of them has ever reached the stage where somebody would ring you first. That stage takes about four years in one place. Stay long enough to get there once and you will find out what it is you have been repeatedly walking away from.
Let the work fit the place for once
Your career has decided where you live for two decades, and each move was justified individually at the time. Reverse the order once, deliberately: choose the place first, then go and find work that fits around it. The professional cost is nearly always smaller than your estimate of it, so run the actual numbers before assuming it is impossible.
