Track your hours crudely for a week — half-hour blocks, one word each — and the pattern becomes visible and, once visible, addressable.
Borrow the structure from outside yourself
Anything depending on your own sense of time will fail, so use other people and physical facts instead: a colleague expecting the file, a fixed class, an appointment, working somewhere that closes. This is not a failure of character; it is the correct engineering for how you are built. Arrange three external anchors and let them carry the week.
The signals are loud and refuse to be specific
Your body reports clearly that something is off and rarely says what, so you get vague tiredness, unfocused discomfort, a general sense of being run down with nothing to point at. The reading is real even when it will not resolve. Treat it as a prompt to change conditions — sleep, food, environment — rather than to find a cause, and give each change a fortnight.
You need a job with the edges already built in
Roles with an open brief and no external structure allow you to disappear into them and produce very little, however capable you are. Roles with deadlines, shifts, clients and handovers turn the same ability into visible output. Choose for the container rather than for the freedom, however counterintuitive that feels when the freedom is being offered.
Colleagues bring you what they cannot say elsewhere
People at work confide in you at a level that surprises both of you, and it is genuine and it consumes hours nobody counts. There is no need to become unavailable. There is a need to notice when the confiding has replaced your own work for the afternoon, and to end a conversation kindly rather than waiting for it to conclude on its own.
Invoices unsent and hours not logged
A measurable amount of money is lost each year to admin that never got done: the unbilled hours, the expense not claimed, the invoice sitting unsent. It is not carelessness about money; it is the same trouble with edges. Automate every part that can be automated and pay somebody for the rest. The fee is smaller than the leak.
You arrive home with no idea how the day went
Asked how work was, you genuinely cannot say, because the day did not resolve into events. The household hears a shrug and reads it as being shut out. Give them one concrete fact instead of a summary — one thing that happened, one thing you did. It is easier for you to produce and it is what they were actually asking for.
