You were in the family and slightly outside it at the same time
There is a particular experience of sitting at a family table feeling fond of everybody and fundamentally unlike them. That is Neptune in Aquarius in the 4th house: belonging and observing arrived together at the foundation, so home has always included a metre of distance.
Anyone born close to you in time was handed the same network-shaped longing; that half is common property. The difference is which door it came through, and yours opens onto the 4th house — so the ideal arrangement is a domestic one, and the household is where it gets tested.
A household organised around a principle
What you want at home is not comfort exactly; it is an arrangement that is fair, chosen and explicable — everyone free, nothing assumed by tradition, roles agreed rather than inherited. It is an admirable design and households are not primarily rational objects. Leave room in the design for somebody wanting something for no defensible reason. That allowance is what makes it liveable.
The distance is not free, even when it is comfortable
Standing slightly apart at home protected you, and it also means you have spent a great deal of your life in the position of the visitor. The cost shows up late, usually as a difficulty in letting anyone see you unguarded in a domestic setting. It is not a fixed trait. It is a practised position, and practised positions can be changed by practice.
Independence accepted in place of belonging
Having arranged your life so that you need nobody, you can go a long time without noticing that you are also known by nobody. Self-sufficiency is genuinely satisfying and it is not the same nutrient. The test is whether anyone could turn up at your door unannounced. Where the answer is no, the independence has been doing a job that belonging should be doing.
Let one person all the way into the house
Not a network, not a chosen family in the abstract — one specific person who has a key, knows the state of your kitchen, and can arrive without notice. It is the single most uncomfortable and most useful arrangement available to you. Start with somebody you already trust and make it concrete rather than notional.
Fond of them, and never quite one of them
You can love your relatives sincerely and feel no kinship with how they see the world, and that combination is lonelier than outright estrangement because there is nothing to point at. Stop looking for the recognition that has never come from that quarter. Enjoy them for what is genuinely there, and get the understanding you need somewhere else.
Assembling a home out of people you chose
Over time you have built something that functions as family from friends, colleagues and unlikely connections, and it is a real achievement rather than a substitute. It does have one structural weakness: chosen bonds have no default obligations, so they need explicit ones. Say out loud who you would drop everything for and ask them the same. Chosen family works when the terms are stated.
Living alone suits you and hides the decline
Solitude genuinely restores you, and it also means nobody sees the week when you stop cooking properly or sleeping at reasonable hours. There is no external check. Build one in deliberately — a regular meal with somebody, a standing call — so that a bad stretch gets noticed by a person rather than by you eventually.
You need a partner who does not require constant proximity
Closeness that assumes every evening together will feel like a slow loss of self to you, and saying so tends to be heard as a lack of interest. Describe your requirement as a positive rather than as a limit: this much time alone is what makes you good company. Partners can work with a specification; they cannot work with an unexplained retreat.
Housing arranged on your own unusual terms
Shared ownership, an unconventional living arrangement, a long lease, a place well outside where people expected — your domestic finances tend to be arranged in a way that reflects your principles and confuses your relatives. That is fine, and it means fewer people can advise you usefully. Get one outside professional to check the structure, since your arrangements are the ones no default advice covers.
