You are why the group functions
What your mind is like is Virgo; where it gets used is the 11th house — and together they make you the operating machinery of every collective you join. The list, the schedule, the thing somebody had to remember, the arrangement that actually works.
Nobody appointed you and everybody depends on it. Groups you are part of run noticeably better than comparable ones, and almost nobody could say which specific thing you do that causes it.
Standards inside a group are awkward
You can see exactly what is being done badly by volunteers who owe nobody anything, and saying so in a voluntary setting lands very differently from saying it at work. Pick the two things that would genuinely break if left, fix those, and let the rest be done imperfectly by people who are giving their time for free.
Your friendships form around being useful
People come into your circle through tasks: the project worked on together, the problem you helped somebody with, the thing you were both trying to organise on a committee neither of you enjoyed. That is a real and underrated route to closeness, and it means very few of your friendships have ever been tested with nothing to do. Keep one that has no activity attached to it at all. It will feel purposeless for a considerable time and it is the one that survives you leaving the group.
The role became permanent by nobody noticing
You took on the practical work once because it needed doing, and several years later it is definitively yours and nobody remembers a decision being made. That is how every unpaid role becomes permanent. Put a term on it retroactively — two more years, then a handover — and announce the date, because nobody else has any reason to raise it.
The future gets planned in specifics
When a group talks about what it wants to become, you are the one who asks what that means in practice: who does it, by when, with what. That question is unwelcome in the moment and it is the difference between a plan and an evening of enthusiasm. Ask it slightly later than your instinct suggests, once the vision has had its run.
Everyone brings you what is broken
Within your circle you are the one who gets asked: the practical question, the thing that needs sorting, the advice that has to be right. That is a good position and it is a narrow one. Ask somebody for help occasionally with something you could manage alone, purely so the traffic has been seen to run in both directions.
The voluntary role is real experience
The organising you do outside paid work — the committee, the association, the thing you quietly keep running for people who have no idea how much it takes — is genuine management experience, and you have never once put a word of it on a document. It counts, and it counts at full weight. Describe it in exactly the terms you would use for a paid role, because the skills involved are identical and the only material difference is that nobody sent an invoice.
The standard is lower out here, deliberately
You apply a professional standard to voluntary work carried out by people who owe nobody anything, and the mismatch is the source of nearly all your frustration inside groups. Decide explicitly which two things have to be done properly and formally release everything else. That is not lowering your standard, it is aiming it, and it is the whole difference between being valued in a collective and being quietly worked around by it.
Somebody in the group has been waiting
Because your attention inside a circle is distributed evenly and practically, a person who is interested in you has no way of telling and no obvious moment in which to find out. It can stay unresolved for years, occasionally on both sides at once. Ask somebody to do one thing that is not a group activity. That single deviation from your normal pattern is legible to them in a way nothing else you do ever is.
