The work arrives rather than gets built

This is a genuine creative gift and it comes with no schedule. Waiting for it looks like laziness from outside and it is actually the method, though it does need a structure around it that you rarely build.
The drawer is full and nothing is finished
You have a considerable quantity of started work: the pieces at seventy percent, the good idea abandoned at the point where it required decisions. Finishing means fixing the thing in one form, and fixing it removes all the other versions you could still feel. That loss is real and it is worth paying. Choose one, close it badly, and notice that the world contains it now.
Romance conducted almost entirely in atmosphere
Your version of attraction is a mood rather than a move: the long look, the shared silence, the sense that something is happening without either of you naming it. It is beautiful and it is frequently invisible to somebody who needs a stated intention. One direct sentence, once. Everything else can stay exactly as impressionistic as it currently is.
Play does not have to produce anything
Unlike almost everybody else, you have no difficulty at all doing something purely because it is pleasant: the afternoon that went nowhere, the thing made for no reason, the hours that produced nothing anybody could point to. That capacity is genuinely rare and you may have been apologising for it. Stop. Protect the unproductive hours, because they are where everything else you make actually comes from.
You need to be moved by what you are making
Work you do not feel anything about comes out flat, and no amount of technique compensates. This makes you unable to fake enthusiasm on commissioned work, which is a professional limitation and a quality guarantee at the same time. Choose the projects with something in them for you, and turn down the ones without, since the flat version damages your reputation more than the refusal would.
Somebody else should handle the schedule
Your output is genuinely good and genuinely unpredictable, which is a combination that survives only with structure around it. Find the agent, the editor, the producer, the colleague who takes care of dates and clients. That is not a weakness to fix — it is the standard arrangement for people who make what you make, and trying to be both halves is what has cost you work.
You are the one who joins in properly
In games and improvisation you commit entirely, with no self-consciousness at all, which gives everyone else permission to do the same. That is a specific and underrated social gift. It also means you can be talked into things you did not want, since the same absence of resistance operates in both directions. Notice the difference between joining in and being carried.
The imagination needs an outlet or it turns inward
When nothing is being made, the same faculty runs anyway: elaborate futures, conversations that never happened, whole scenarios constructed and dwelt in. That is the identical machinery with nowhere to go. Give it a form — writing, music, anything with an output — and it stops being an internal weather system. This is the most practical thing available in this position.
Children get your full imagination
With young people you are entirely at home: the story invented on the spot, the game taken as seriously as they take it, no visible line between their world and yours. They notice that most adults are pretending and that you are not. Give the same seriousness to what they make. Being met at that level once is something a child keeps.
