Your appetite for information is enormous and it is satisfied locally: the history of the building, the argument in the neighbourhood group, what the person behind the counter used to do. Where somebody else needs novelty imported from far away, you find inexhaustible material within a mile. That short radius is a real advantage, since detailed local knowledge is rare and quietly useful to everybody around you.
Your first instinct is to pass it on
Information does not settle in you so much as move through: the article forwarded a minute after reading it, the answer relayed to whoever needed it, the fact repeated at the next three conversations. You function as a distribution network rather than a store. It makes you extraordinarily useful and it means you rarely sit with anything long enough for it to become yours. Once a week, keep something and find out what it turns into.
A little about an unreasonable number of things
Your general knowledge is wide, shallow in most places and startlingly deep in a few, and none of that pattern was planned. It makes you the person who can hold a real conversation with anybody in the room about whatever they care about. What it does not produce is authority: knowing something about everything is not the same as being the one who gets asked. Choose two areas and stay past the point where the interest runs out.
Two lines of work, or one with two halves
Your working life rarely has a single shape: the main role plus the writing, the day job plus the thing you teach on the side. That is not indecision, it is how this wiring stays fed, and forcing it into one track reliably produces a competent unhappy person. Arrange it deliberately rather than apologetically — say at the outset that you keep a second line running, and pick employers who can hear that without reading it as an exit plan.
The night is where the day is still talking
Your sleep is where the day gets processed: conversations rerun and improved, three threads still open, the whole thing narrated at length. None of that is rest. What actually works is a hard stop on incoming material a couple of hours before bed, which sounds like deprivation and behaves like relief. Write the open items down first — the wiring accepts a handover far better than an instruction to stop.
The relationship is the conversation
You fall for the exchange itself: the person who volleys, who has read the thing, whose reply comes back improved. When the talking goes flat you assume the feeling has, and sometimes you are wrong, because quiet periods are not always decline. Ask before concluding. And notice that being understood requires you to say something unclever occasionally, which is the one register you avoid.
You know everybody within a postcode
Your local reach is unusual: the shopkeeper, the neighbour two doors along, three people from a group you attended once. Every connection is light and the network is enormous. It is genuinely useful and it carries one specific blind spot — you can be surrounded by acquaintance and still short of anybody who knows how your year has gone. Promote two of them on purpose.
