The arrangement gets designed from scratch
In the 7th house an Aquarius Mercury turns closeness into something built to your own specification. What a partnership is for, how much time it involves, what the two of you owe each other — you have examined all of it rather than adopting the standard version.
The result usually works well and rarely looks conventional. What it costs is the automatic understanding that comes with a familiar arrangement, so everything has to be stated that other couples never have to discuss.
Friendship first, always
Your closest bonds begin as intellectual companionship and become something else later, if at all. Romantic intensity with somebody you would not choose as a friend has no hold on you whatsoever. That is a genuine filter rather than caution, and it is worth stating early, because your slow start gets read as lack of interest by anybody running the ordinary sequence.
Equality is not negotiable for you
Any arrangement with a power gradient in it — financial, emotional, one person deferring — becomes intolerable regardless of who has the advantage. You would rather have less and have it level. That is a real principle and it is worth saying out loud, since a partner may be offering deference as generosity and cannot understand why it is going badly.
Your distance is not what it looks like
You need substantial time alone inside a close relationship, and taking it has nothing to do with how you feel about the person. Almost nobody reads it that way without being told. Say it as a fact about how you work rather than as something arising in the moment, and say it early, because said during a difficult week it sounds like the beginning of an exit.
You argue the principle rather than the incident
In a disagreement you move immediately to the general case — what the rule should be, what this implies, whether it is consistent — while the person opposite is still upset about Tuesday. Both conversations are legitimate and only one of them is happening. Handle the Tuesday first, briefly and sincerely, and the principle becomes a discussion rather than a defence.
You will not perform a relationship
The standard rituals — the anniversary correctly observed, the expected gesture, the vocabulary everybody else uses — feel hollow to you, so you decline most of them, and a partner can easily read that as indifference. Substitute rather than explain. Invent one ritual that is genuinely yours, keep it exactly, and it will carry more weight between you than a decade of properly executed conventions ever would.
One-to-one is where you are actually warm
In a group you are interesting and slightly remote; with one person and a subject you are entirely present and unexpectedly warm. That version of you exists and most people have never met it. Arrange the one-to-one deliberately rather than waiting for it to arise, because the group setting is where almost all of your socialising accidentally happens.
Choose a partner who ships
The working counterpart you need is not another ideas person but somebody who converts and finishes, and who will tell you plainly when a redesign is not worth the delay. Look for that specifically rather than for enthusiasm about your thinking. Two originators is a pleasant arrangement that produces nothing anybody can use.
The hard part is being depended on
Independence you can arrange, and you have. What is genuinely difficult in this position is somebody needing you in a way that is neither reciprocal nor negotiable: a bad year, a stretch where they cannot hold up their end of anything. Decide in advance that you will stay through one of those, because the decision taken in the moment will be beautifully reasoned and it will be the wrong one.
