You can see why each party believes what they believe, even when one of them is plainly in the wrong, and that capacity is what makes agreement possible. It also delays the moment where you conclude that somebody is behaving badly. Set a limit on the benefit of the doubt: two occasions, then believe what you observed.
Intimacy that requires the terms to be even
You cannot be fully open with somebody while an imbalance between you is unaddressed, and because you will not raise it, that state can persist for years. What looks like reserve is a fairness account running in the background. Say the specific item out loud. The closeness returns almost immediately once the ledger has been mentioned.
Crisis handled by keeping people talking
When something serious happens your instinct is to hold the relationships together: get the parties in the same room, keep communication open, prevent positions from hardening. That is genuinely valuable and it is exhausting, and nobody counts it as work. Ask for something for yourself during a crisis, once. It will not occur to anybody to offer.
The grievance that was never registered
There is something significant somebody did to you that you decided not to raise, on the grounds that raising it would achieve nothing and damage the relationship. That calculation may be correct and the item is still live. Say it once, without requiring an outcome. The purpose is to stop carrying an account nobody else knows exists.
You will negotiate anybody's terms but your own
Put in front of somebody else's settlement, loan or inheritance you are precise, fair and effective. Put in front of your own you accept the first reasonable offer to avoid the unpleasantness. Get a third party for anything of yours above a certain size. It is not weakness, it is using the arrangement in which your ability actually operates.
Depth requires the awkward conversation first
For you the closeness follows the honesty rather than the other way round, so the thing you are avoiding saying is precisely what is holding the relationship at its current depth. It never gets easier by waiting. Choose the smallest unsaid item and say it this week, and treat the discomfort as the price of the next layer.
Carried tension from other people's disputes
Mediating other people's conflicts leaves a residue in you that does not clear when the matter resolves, because you absorbed both positions and neither was yours to hold. Notice the pattern and put a limit on it. After any dispute you helped settle, take a day where nobody is allowed to bring you anything at all.
Who gets what, and who says it
When family money or property has to be divided you become the person who makes it work, at some cost to your own share and considerable cost to your standing with whoever ends up dissatisfied. Decide before you start whether you are a party or a broker. Being both, which is your default, is the arrangement that leaves you with neither.
Sent in when the relationship has broken down
The client who has stopped returning calls, the supplier in dispute, the two departments who will not cooperate: this is where your value is highest and least visible, since success looks like a problem that quietly stopped existing. Log those. Nothing else creates a record of the most difficult work you do.
