The test is what you do with a position that is correct and would make you look foolish to hold. Keep one of those a decade and you will have proved to yourself that the beliefs are actually yours.
The stage is part of the compensation
Work that involves teaching, speaking, publishing or otherwise putting your name to a body of thought will get more out of you than better-paid work that does not. Treat visibility as part of the package when comparing offers, because you will do markedly better work in the role that has an audience in it, and better work is what compounds.
The friend who broadened everybody
You take people places, introduce them to things, insist they try what you have found. Several people in your life have a whole interest they got from you. Keep doing it and add one question: ask what they have found lately. Enthusiasm is a two-way instrument and you have mostly been operating the transmitting half.
Ambitious plans, undertaken publicly
You commit to physical goals with an announcement attached, which is genuinely effective for you and creates a specific problem: an injury or a bad month becomes something to hide rather than to adjust for. Announce the direction rather than the target. It keeps the accountability and removes the reason to push through something that should be paused.
Somebody whose world is bigger than yours
What holds you is a partner who has been somewhere, believes something, or knows a subject well enough to teach you. Admiration is the mechanism of your attachment rather than a bonus. Say so plainly, because it means the thing that would end a relationship is not conflict but the day you stop learning anything from them, and that is worth flagging early.
