What you make has to come from something real

The serious bet, not the casual one
Risk interests you when the stakes are real: the venture that could actually change things, the commitment that cannot be reversed. Small gambling bores you completely. A wager with nothing riding on it is not entertainment to you at all. That preference is coherent and it means each individual decision matters enormously, so decide the maximum you can lose before you begin rather than during.
Children get honesty rather than reassurance
With younger people you tell the truth: about difficulty, about what things cost, about what is actually happening. Children trust you for it and occasionally get more than they asked for. Match the answer to the question, since your instinct is to give the complete account and the complete account is not always the kind thing.
You will not perform enjoyment
If you are not actually having a good time, nothing about you suggests that you are, and this has been noticed at several occasions. It is honesty rather than rudeness. The effort of pretending is greater than the effort of most work you do. Decline the invitation rather than attending grimly, since your presence at something you dislike costs everybody more than your absence would.

The years you spent moderately interested in something produced almost nothing. You take their side, permanently
With your own children the loyalty is absolute and visible: you would take on anybody on their behalf without asking many questions first. That certainty is worth a great deal to them. Ask the questions anyway, since a child who is defended without being understood learns that the defence is not really about them.
You will stake it on one thing
Given the choice between spreading resources and putting everything behind the one you believe in, you have chosen the second more than once. It has worked and it has also nearly not. Keep a portion permanently out of reach of your own conviction, since here the conviction is genuinely strong and it is not always right.
