The returns are considerable. People you encouraged years ago are now well placed and still fond of you, and a good deal of what arrives in your life comes through that accumulated goodwill rather than through anything you arranged.
Causes want a figurehead and you are it
Movements, campaigns and shared projects push you to the front because you can make a case in public and hold a room. That is real service and it is also exposure. Make sure the position comes with actual authority rather than only visibility, since being the face of a decision you did not make is the worst arrangement available.
Being one among many is the hard part
In a group that treats everybody equally you go quiet and eventually stop attending, and you have generally explained that to yourself as the group being dull. It is worth being honest about instead. Stay in one collective where you hold no special position, because the experience is genuinely good for you and it is the only one you avoid.
Friendship conducted at full warmth
You are extravagant with your friends: the celebrations, the introductions, the loud championing of whatever they happen to be doing. The social calendar is heavier than it looks
Your weeks fill with occasions you genuinely enjoy, and the accumulated late nights and constant company cost you more than any of them individually seem to. Enjoyment is not the same as rest. Keep two evenings a week entirely unbooked, since the ones you leave free are the only ones that ever get used for recovery.
